Author of more than 75 original articles, book chapters, papers and other scientific contributions, including the book, Chemical and Physical Behavior of Human Hair, he has also authored more than 25 US patents, primarily on specialty shampoos, hair conditioners, permanent hair treatments, and compositions mild to skin. Robbins has been awarded five best scientific paper awards by the Society of Cosmetic Chemists, from which in 1989 he also received the Maison de Nevarre Medal. Robbins is on the editorial advisory staff of the International Journal of Cosmetic Science and has previously served as editor of the Journal of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists. Since retiring from his position as vice president of advanced technology at Colgate Palmolive, he has headed his private consulting business, as well as taught courses on hair topics through the Center for Professional Advancement, the Textile Research Institute in Princeton, New Jersey, and at Procter and Gamble. James R. Schwartz is a research fellow at The Procter & Gamble Company where he is currently directing research initiatives on seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff to identify more efficacious treatments. His extensive studies of how surfactants and polymers behave on skin have led to numerous innovations in the field of beauty science. Schwartz received his Bachelor’s in Chemistry from Kenyon College, where he graduated cum laude, and earned his doctorate in Inorganic Chemistry from the University of Illinois in 1986. He is the lead author of articles in numerous peer-reviewed journals including the Journal of American Academy of Dermatology and the Journal of the American Chemical Society. In addition, Schwartz is an active member of the American Chemical Society, Society of Cosmetic Chemists, and the American Oil Chemists Society. He was elected to the scientific research society Sigma Xi in 1987. Schwartz’s work focuses primarily on the science of skin, hair, and scalp care. He holds eighteen patents for personal care products and beauty science technology.
