Hair Ethnicity 208 Some choose to “lock” their hair into a style, which requires them to intentionally entangle sections of hair so that they are contained in configurations known as locs. These are typical styling options for those who want to maintain the natural curl in hair. When versatility is desired in going from natural curly to straighter styles, heat appliances such as hot combs and flat irons often are used at temperatures that range from 150–232°C (302–450°F) to temporarily straighten the hair. Just as with looser curl types, heat processing can be reversed under humid conditions or when the hair is directly in contact with water. Therefore, a more permanent method to straighten hair is through the use of relaxers and is the most widely used treatment for manageability. The use of texturizers is popular for those who want to lessen the curl in hair without taking out all of the curl. This technology is the same as that of relaxers, so it is a permanent alteration of hair but the active ingredient responsible for altering the curl is at a lower concentration.
