Figure 2 shows a typical experimental setup, where a hair tress is suspended from a load cell that is connected to the cross-head of an Instron Tensile Tester. Thus, the hair can be pulled through the comb with an evaluation of the “combing force.” As outlined in the Garcia and Diaz paper, measurements can be performed in both wet and dry states. Examples of typical outputs from both wet and dry state combing experiments are given in Figures 3 and 4. Both plots show the measured frictional force as a function of distance travelled by the crosshead. In wet state experiments, these forces rise initially as the hair engages the comb a plateau then occurs during the combing process, followed by a drop off to zero as the hair eventually disengages the comb. As shown, multiple combing strokes are collected for each tress. From this output, a number of parameters can then be extracted to quantify the process. Garcia and Figure 2.
