525 APPENDIX A Appendix A: Keratin and KAP Nomenclature A new nomenclature for keratins that unifies hair and skin keratins was proposed in 2006.1,2 This new nomenclature is shown in Table 1. Note that human skin keratins are not changed. Table 1 New Keratin Nomenclature Category Number Range Human Type I Epithelial 9-28 Human Type I Hair 31-40 Nonhuman Type I Epithelial And Hair 41-70 Human Type II Epithelial 1-8 71-80 Human Type II Hair 81-86 Nonhuman Type II Epithelial and Hair 87-120 Type II Keratin Pseudogenes 121-220 Type I Keratin Pseudogenes 221 An attempt was made to have some consistency between the old and new nomenclatures for hair. Instead of Ha1-Ha8, the human type I hair keratins are now K31-K40. Except for the new members K39 and K49, Ha_ is replaced by K3_. In similar fashion, the six type 2 hair keratins, formerly Hb1-Hb6, are renamed K81-K86. The renamed hair keratins are summarized in Table 2.
